    LARRY R. WOOD - CLASS OF 1963

LARRY R. WOOD – Larry Wood is a graduate of Vermilion High School, Class of 1963.  As a high school student-athlete, Larry earned four varsity letters in football and was Co-Captain of the 1962 undefeated Lakeland Conference Champions.   Larry was awarded a four year athletic scholarship to the University of Virginia where he earned two varsity letters in football.  Between 1967 and 1994, Larry was a member of the Navy’s Pensacola Goshawks football team where he started at right tackle. This team featured Roger Staubach as the quarterback.  Mr. Wood served 28 years in the Navy with two tours in the Vietnam conflict as a helicopter pilot picking up downed pilots and supporting Navy patrol boats.  Larry has received 24 major medals and honors from the United States Navy with personal accolades from such world famous leaders as:  Senator Barry Goldwater, Sir Winston Churchill III, and the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Melvin Pasley.  During his tenure in the United States Navy, Larry was named  Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Facility Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territories.  His final years of service were as Air Boss on the attack Aircraft Carrier USS Nassau where he was third in command.  Mr. Wood retired with the rank of full Commander.  Residing in Chula Vista, California, Larry is married to Priscilla and they have one son Ryan.  Mr. Larry Wood will be escorted by VHS Student Council member Amy Kobasic.
