VHS Grads Selected for OSU Marching Band

VHS Grads Selected for OSU Marching Band

The Ohio State University Marching Band is recognized across the nation for its brass and percussion sound, marching style and signature "Ohio" formation. This prestigious band performs at football games and many special events throughout the year.

Each year 500 to 600 individuals flock to open practice sessions with the hope of an opportunity to march with the band. Candidates must attend practices in June, July and August, and participate in final auditions held in late August. Ultimately, only 225 marchers are selected for band membership.

Congratulations to brothers Philip and Andrew Prete who both earned spots in the OSU band this year!

Philip, a senior, is in his third year with the percussion section. Freshman Andrew was selected for a spot in the trumpet section. Both Vermilion grads enjoyed marching band while at VHS, and feel that their experience here helped prepare them to meet the challenge of the OSU band tryouts.

While the band is steeped in the traditions of the past, they are very innovative in their preparation. This year the group began a student-led initiative to provide each band member with an iPad that they can use to view drill charts, memorize music, and more. The project is being piloted this year by squad leaders to test the project, and the innovative idea has been welcomed by students and staff alike.
