Vermilion Bus Driver Receives Recognition

Vermilion school bus driver Jim VanAntwerp was honored as Bus Driver of the Year by Lorain County Educational Service Center at their Pupil Transportation Professional Development and Awards Banquet on Thursday, October 11.

Jim started driving for Vermilion in March of 2009.  Through the years he transported of all age levels, and for many extra-curricular events.  Jim has always done a great job of interacting with students, teachers and fellow staff members.  He is a consummate professional, treating everyone he meets with respect.

Jim is a second generation American, with grandparents who came to the U.S. from Italy.  He was raised in the Little Italy section of Cleveland, and worked at Frankie and Johnnies Restaurant as a bus boy in his youth.  Jim loved eating spaghetti in the back room while on break and watching the television show “The Untouchables”.  When Jim was 18 he joined the Marines and served 6 years, with time extended to serve in Vietnam.   He returned to the Cleveland area and raised six children.  His extended family includes 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Thank you Jim for the care and concern you show to the students that you transport every day.  We are glad you chose to drive a school bus in Vermilion!
