Freshman Open House

On Monday, August 26th, Vermilion High School held their first annual Freshman Rush following Freshman Orientation.  Below are some of the clubs and some information presented that day.

NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE - This National Honorary Society recognizes students who have been active in Speech and Debate and have attended at least four tournaments during the course of the year.  Celebrating its 92 nd year, the NFL is one of the most prestigious clubs a high school student can include on his resume. Members are committed to excellence in persuasive speech, argumentation, creative writing, and acting, both solo and duet. The Vermilion Chapter of the NFL is affiliated with the North Coast of Ohio Region and competes annually at both the State and National level for prizes, scholarships and other awards.

The VHS Speech and Debate Club is in its 17th year under the direction of Mr. Michael Amstutz.  Boasting State finalists in debate, duet acting and prose and poetry, Vermilion's Speech and Debate team is one of the most active in the State of Ohio. Students who participate in the club compete from mid-October until mid-February by traveling to high school competitions around the Northern tier of Ohio.
Students may compete in dramatic interpretation, duet acting, humorous interpretation, oratorical and original speech, current events commentary, debate (Lincoln Douglas, two person and 4 person), prose reading, poetry reading and creative impromptu speaking.
In February students compete with 30 other district schools to compete at the three day State Festival sponsored by the OHSSL.  By emphasizing creativity, promoting energetic acting and stimulating research and debate, the VHS Speech and Debate Club prepares students for communication skills that will be valuable, not only in college, but for every practical experience that involves people and communicating.

Affiliated with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the newly formed Chapter of the Spanish Honor Society enables students to learn more about Hispanic and Peninsular Spanish cultures.  Students that participate in the club are also permitted to take the National Spanish Examination in March if they have completed at least one level of Spanish. Plaques, realia, trophies and scholarships are awarded to students who perform well.  Community service projects involving  awareness of foreign language study and quarterly meetings are offered.  Students who have completed at least four years of Spanish with a B or better average in that foreign language are awarded honor chords at graduation.

Model UN is an organization designed to allow student  to focus on current international issues.  Students will work in groups of three and be assigned a country to represent.  In three meetings in the months of October and November the students will be going Case Western Reserve University to discuss their country's point of view on these specific world issues.  The students will be interacting with other students from some 25 schools that will be in attendance.

If you are a person that is interested in world issues and is not afraid to talk and debate in front of a group, then model UN is for you.  There will be flyers in the upcoming weeks around school for our first meeting.  Hope to see you there.
