School Opening Delayed until September 2

The Vermilion Board of Education approved a plan last night to delay the start of school by four days to give contractors more time to complete work. The official first day for the 2014-2015 school year will be Tuesday, September 2, 2014.

Weather conditions have impacted the progress of remodeling projects at Sailorway Middle School and Vermilion High School. The rain storm on August 2 caused significant water damage at Sailorway. “Our projects were moving along on schedule prior to the storm,” said Superintendent Philip Pempin. “Restoration specialist got to work immediately to repair the damage, but cleanup takes time. We felt it was important to make sure the building is clean, safe and dry prior to students returning to school.”

Board members agreed that delaying the start of all three schools was the best solution at this time. “Our school calendar includes additional hours to help us deal with issues like this,” Board President Dale Dawson said. “It is important that we insure our students come back to a school that is ready for instruction.”

Starting and ending times for school will remain the same. Parents and students should check the school website and Facebook page for a full list of back-to-school events.
